i remember feeling bad after budget debate -- remember when the government almost shut down? don't worry, it's coming back with the same being every night. they would all get together and talk about whatever and i was getting pretty bored with the whole situation because it was always a tenet night and nothing much doing. i would try to get the best angle and there was no one one in west wing at 10:00 at night. i am in in the roosevelt room trying to get a great shot of speaker of boehner but it wasn't fair to those guys. is kind of startling when they are coming out of around. he doesn't really know who i am and doesn't know exactly what i do and hopping out of cupboards with the camera. for that heels gets it. it is like arun is a scammer but you have to think about how it's impacting other folks because it's kind of a precious thing. this is not set in stone. like i said if there is a president romney i am not sure he will continue the practice and even more so than that it's interesting to note that both hope and i have preexisting relationships with the president. we kno

she stumbled on the truth when she said that obama is not a good debater. it is not that obama was off his game, that is his game. if he does not have a prompter, he is not good. you see it in his press conferences where he does not have a prompter. he has never been good at conferences. he rambles. the press has been unimpressed with what he does. he can decide how long he wants to take for an answer. this is who he is. it is going to be at a town hall the next one. he has more ability to connect with an audience than romney, so he will have an advantage in the second debate that he did not have been the first. >> would you rather be good or lucky? 7.8% unemployment rate. that is pretty good news. >> unless you actually look at the numbers. if you look at those getting new jobs, aut 114,000. the need to have 150 to stay at the same rate. what has been happening is you have people leaving the work force, retiring, or -- wait a minute, nina -- or when you become chronically unemployed, over one year, you drop off the rolls and you are not put in the denomina

if i were moderating the debate that is coming october 3rd, i would spend about half of it asking them what would you do specifically. give us the diagnosis of the plan -- [applause] and tell us what you're really going to do. and part of that question is there has to be a willingness to compromise, and there has to be an innate willingness to do things that are painful for your side. i'm going to stop there, and we'll do questions. one more story. remember years ago the head of simon & schuster after i had published one of my books took me to dinner in new york city at one of these restaurants where you would never want to go where you have to pay. [laughter] and he said what's your next book going to be about in and i said, oh, well, i haven't decided. i'm going to do some thinking, some reading, some research. and he looked at me and said, what? i said, yeah, i want to do thinking, reading, reporting, weighing the alternatives, and he said why are you going to waste your time? [laughter] i said, well, that's what you try to do. and he said, no, no, no, you are one of our authors. i

the barack obama i heard on the debate stage was the barack obama i have been listening to now for four years. he sounded very much like himself. i don't think he was terribly bad. i think he has a very weak case and i think that the circumstances in the country present the challenging candidate with all kinds of opportunities. mitt romney was on his game and he took advantage of those opportunities. the president is saddled with weak circumstances and therefore a weak case. and it is not surprising to me that he didn't argue it very well and the other thing is despite his reputation as being this world class orator, maybe he is with a set piece speech. there was not a lot of evidence in the past that he was ever a great debater. i don't think this thing was as big a shock as the president's supporters on the left feel. i think they all thought he was 10 feet tall. he is not 10 feet tall. never has been. >> chris: about the specific issue of the truth squadding, fact checking of romney, and they continue to press. i don't think it is a very accurate thing, the $5 trillion tax cut and ta
